Montana Gold's hemp fiber weed barrier was recognized with an Innovation Award at Techtextil North America 2026, held August 4–6 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Techtextil North America Innovation Awards honor exceptional performance in research, new materials, products, and technologies across the technical textiles and nonwovens industry. |
This year, a plastic-free alternative to one of the most common products in the garden aisle took home the recognition.
What Is Montana Gold Weed Barrier?
Montana Gold's weed barrier is an alternative to traditional weed barriers made without plastics or synthetic adhesives. It’s the same product found in the same aisle of any garden center, just made with something better. Instead of persisting in the soil as microplastics, it biodegrades and returns to the earth.

What Is Techtextil North America?
Techtextil North America welcomes professionals from across the technical textiles and nonwovens industry for a show filled with innovation, collaboration, and discovery. The exhibit hall comes to life as attendees connect with exhibitors, explore new technologies, attend educational sessions, and exchange ideas that help shape the future of the industry — making it one of the most fitting stages for a hemp-based material to earn industry-wide recognition.
Why Is Our Weed Barrier Great?
Sometimes, changing what something is made from is enough to change its impact on the world.
- No synthetic materials — built without plastics or synthetic adhesives
- No microplastics in the places we grow our food
- Biodegradable — adds nutrients back into the soil as it breaks down
- Supports plant growth while suppressing weeds
- Moisture retention — helps keep soil consistently hydrated
- Temperature regulation — moderates soil temperature for healthier root growth
Traditional plastic-based weed barrier sits in the ground indefinitely, then slowly breaks apart into microplastics that work their way into the soil, soil that we grow our food in. Montana Gold's weed barrier is designed to do the opposite: break down. It enriches the soil instead of polluting it.

What Is Montana Gold Hemp Fiber?
Montana Gold hemp fiber is grown by American families with the support of IND HEMP's in-house agronomy team, coming off the field as the highest-quality hemp fiber possible. From there, it's processed at an IND HEMP facility engineered specifically for hemp, where the bast fiber is separated from the inner core of the hemp stalk through a process called decortication.
After decortication, the fiber goes through additional mechanical processing to upgrade it for a wide range of applications — from textiles and construction materials to garden products like weed barrier — cleaning it thoroughly enough to skip a separate scouring step before further processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What award did Montana Gold's weed barrier win?
Montana Gold's hemp fiber weed barrier received an Innovation Award at Techtextil North America 2026, held August 4–6, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
What is Montana Gold weed barrier made from?
It's made from Montana Gold hemp fiber, without plastics or synthetic adhesives, offering the same weed-suppressing function as traditional weed barrier without leaving microplastics behind in the soil.
Is hemp weed barrier biodegradable?
Yes. Unlike traditional plastic weed barrier, Montana Gold's hemp weed barrier is biodegradable and adds nutrients back into the soil as it breaks down.
How does hemp weed barrier compare to plastic weed barrier?
Hemp weed barrier performs the same core function as plastic weed barrier — suppressing weeds while supporting plant growth — while also offering moisture retention and temperature regulation, without introducing microplastics into garden soil.
