Hemp has been used to build homes for people for years. This week, we used it to build a home for beavers. IND HEMP got its boots muddy alongside the Big Hole Watershed Committee on Montana's first beaver reintroduction project, using Montana Gold hemp bales and erosion control materials to construct beaver dam analogs and lodges along the Big Hole River watershed.

 

Why Beavers Matter for Montana's Water

Beavers matter for anyone who depends on water, which is all of us. As natural ecosystem engineers, beavers slow, spread, and store water across the land, acting like a natural speed bump against drought, floods, and fire.

When a beaver builds a dam, it doesn't just create a pond. It:

  • Slows water down, giving it more time to soak into the ground instead of rushing downstream
  • Spreads water out across the floodplain, recharging soil moisture well beyond the streambank
  • Stores water through dry months, keeping streams flowing later into the summer when Montana's landscape needs it most

How Hemp Fits Into Beaver Dam Restoration

The Big Hole Watershed Committee's beaver reintroduction project needed a natural, biodegradable material to build beaver dam analogs (BDAs) and lodges that could give returning beavers a head start on rebuilding their habitat. That's where Montana Gold hemp fiber came in.
