What Did IND HEMP Bring to the Musselshell Bank Restoration Project?
Sometimes putting hemp to work means finding a new solution for an old problem. This summer, IND HEMP joined the Conservation Committee, Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) and BSWC members for the next phase of the Musselshell Bank restoration project at Rowton Ranch. The goal was straightforward: help stabilize the stream bank and give newly planted willows a better chance to establish. The materials used to help make that happen? Willow cuttings, Montana Gold® Mulch Mats, Montana Gold® hemp fiber, hemp straw bales—and a lot of hands willing to get dirty. |
Why Healthy Stream Banks Matter
Stream banks are more than the edges of a river or creek. Healthy riparian areas help hold soil in place, filter runoff, provide wildlife habitat and support the vegetation that keeps waterways functioning.
When banks become degraded, erosion can accelerate and native vegetation can struggle to reestablish. Restoration projects like the work at Rowton Ranch are designed to help kick-start the natural processes that allow these areas to recover.
Willows are particularly valuable because their root systems help stabilize soil along waterways. But getting young willow cuttings established takes time—and during those early stages, moisture retention and protection around the plants can make a difference.

How Hemp Was Used in the Restoration
IND HEMP donated several hemp-based materials to the project and sent volunteers to work alongside the conservation crews.
Willow cuttings were installed along the streambank as part of the long-term stabilization effort. Each bundle of cuttings was placed with a mulch mat and surrounded by hemp straw bales to help retain moisture around the young plants as they establish.
Hemp fiber blocks were also incorporated at the end of the brush matrix treatment, adding another layer of natural material to help protect the restoration area.
The idea is simple: use plant-based materials to support living plants while the stream bank begins doing the work of stabilizing itself.
